Sustainable OKC
Promoting community sustainability by facilitating grassroots action, fostering awareness of sustainability, and serving as an informational and networking resource in the Oklahoma City area.
Sustainable OKC is a grassroots organization working at the crossroads of business, environment, and social justice in Oklahoma City. As a local chapter of the nonprofit Oklahoma Sustainability Network, Sustainable OKC organizes projects to make our community more beautiful, livable, responsible, and equitable, now and in the future.
Sustainable OKC was founded in spring of 2005. Our main activity is centered on the work of our committees, which include the Projects and Education Committee and the Volunteer Management Committee (more information under What You Can Do). We also sponsor Green Drinks.
What is sustainability?
Sustainable OKC uses the United Nations definition of sustainability:
Sustainability: meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
At Sustainable OKC, sustainability is based on the interaction of business, environment, and social justice. We feel that these topics should be addressed not separately but rather in a way that acknowledges the inherent and beneficial interaction among them. We envision an Oklahoma City in which businesses are socially and environmentally responsible; in which the improvement of our environment is a mainstream, non-political activity that contributes to our economy; and in which social justice is given equal weight with business and environment in establishing community priorities.
Sustainable OKC works to ensure that our city values its future as much as its present. You can get more information about Sustainable OKC by contacting chapter president Shauna Struby.
